For writing, we colored in our illustrations. This afternoon we shared our stories with Mrs. Quinlan's class. We got pencils!
We had Music. We had a substitute. We sang silly songs and we read a
book with silly songs in it. We also played games that involved music.
In math, we did a packet to show Mrs. Fitzgerald what we know about adding, subtracting, money, and clocks.
Yesterday, we sorted foods on the healthy food plate. Go to choosemyplate.gov to learn more!
Welcome to Mrs LG's 1st grade
everything you need to know to be successful as a first grader!
Nov 27, 2012
We had Library. Mrs. O read The Watcher and The Missing Mitten.
Today Mrs. Fitzgerald read Today I Will Fly by Mo Willems.
For Morning Work, we sorted dominoes by odd and even numbers. We also filled in shapes with pattern blocks.
In Writing, we edited our stories with checklists of everything we need to remember like periods, capitals, spaces, and more.
2 weeks done
Hello Everybody,
We've finished 2 full weeks of Kindergarten and I have to say your kids are doing well. We continue to establish daily routines, practice how we walk around the school, and learn what good listening in the Meadow "looks" like. I believe each child is feeling more and more comfortable in The Hollow. Everyone is participating in our activities and all seem eager to learn.
We had our first 2 fire drills this week. They are always interesting- the alarm is so loud it's a little frightening. (OK it's a lot frightening at first) Our class had practiced twice previously without the alarm and the kids did great getting out of the building and to our assigned spot. I had another K teacher mention how "together" our class was.
We've started our Lively Letters and have done p and b (lip puffers) and t and d (tongue dancers). Each letter has a great song and movement to help the kids learn and remember. This program was developed by speech pathologists with an emphasis on how the sounds are formed. Your child may be able to sing the songs to you.
In Writing Workshop we are focusing on oral storytelling. Each child gets to sit in the author's chair and tell a simple story from their life. Oral storytelling is the first step in being able to put thoughts together and then express them for others to hear or read. Your children are learning they have important things to say. It's been quite interesting- but don't worry, what happens in The Hollow stays in the Hollow. Students have also had opportunity to begin making books, which is the format we will use for their writing. This coming week we will also begin guided drawing to aid them in their illustrations. (Illustration is the bulk of their writing at this point in the process.)
In Science we've continued with the Life Cycle of a Butterfly. We have one more chrysalis we're waiting on. When we release the butterfly I may try to take more pictures and get everybody's head this time. We'll see.
Our Math stations have been mainly exploring various manipulatives. This week I will add simple tasks to the stations. In our Math lessons we've begun learning about zero, measuring, and the relationships between pattern block shapes hexagon, trapezoid, square, triangle, fat rhombus, skinny rhombus, and triangles.
Some things to ask your child:
what is metamorphosis
what is migration and where do monarchs fly
what is symmetry
where we line up during a fire drill
to sing you the Lively Letters songs
to sing you our butterfly song
to show you the exercises we do before handwriting
Looking forward to another great week,
Sandi

First Day
Whew! We made it through our first day together. I have to tell you your children are awesome!
They did so well handling the overwhelming chaos that is the first day of a new school year.
Some things I particularly noticed:
They were kind to each other and played well together.
They were respectful and tried their best to listen and to do what was asked of them.
They participated in all the activities.
Plus, the way they cleaned up after each activity was phenomenal, especially from free play.
Kudos to all of you, as I believe this is a reflection of all your hard work. Now if I can only continue the great job you've started.
Lunch/Snack- perhaps the trickiest part of the day was doing the morning lunch count and the snack milk count.
1. I have to stress that you must put all lunch money in a sealed envelope or zip lock bag with your child's whole name on it and my name. This goes directly into a lunch $ envelope and is sent to the kitchen. The easiest way to handle lunch/snack $ is to put $ on your child's account through the nutrition program. You need your child's ID# to do this. I can give you this number at your request.
2. If your child is ordering lunch or snack milk, please discuss with your child what he/she will be choosing for the day. Please do not send notes in with what their choice will be, I am not with them when they make their choices in the cafeteria. I know it's a huge task for them, but I know they can do it and will quickly get the hang of it with a little coaching.
3. Please put their snack in a small brown bag, a zip-lock bag, or a small lunch bag so that it will fit inside their desk. There isn't room for a big lunch box. Lunch boxes with lunches in them are put in the top of their cubbies so they can grab them on their way up to lunch as they come in from recess, but snacks are kept in their desks for afternoon snack. Friday I think some ate their snack for their lunch or vice versa. No worries, we'll get the hang of this.
If you're talking with your child about his/her day you could ask them about-
singing "Tooty Ta"
the owls we made for the bulletin board
the books Mrs. O read them at Library
reading The Kissing Hand and our hunt for Chester the raccoon
I'll post some pictures soon.
Looking for more great days next week.
As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns. Have a great weekend.
